I've always wondered what the quote in the title was about, because although the Doctor does things that can change lives for the worse, or even end them, I'd never say they were cold. "Cold" means "heartless", and the Doctor's got two.
This weekend, on my fourth watch of an episode I thought I didn't like, everything began to make sense.
When I first saw Let's Kill Hitler, I was too excited to think straight anything, all BOUNCE BOUNCE BOUNCY. The second time I watched it, I realised what I felt: the same way I did when I read the last Harry Potter book; too much of Underplot, not enough of Overplot. It was a very *functional* episode, but too functional. Like a Swiss army knife that's got so much on it you can't use it properly because it's too big. The third time, I watched it with my sister as entertainment: something I'd watch if it was just, y'know, on. During the fourth viewing, when she was more awake, she said, "What does he do in that change?"
That made me start thinking about what actually happens in this episode.

HOLD THE PHONE
22/5/11 11:38 WAIT WAIT WAIT Is all the stuff about Rory dying and Amy's Schroedinger's pregnancy to do with the Charley's paradox in Chimes of Midnight???
( sort-of spoiler )
I love you Moff, but that's BEEN DONE.

OK, so I heard from somewhere that Rory and River have some kind of connection. Since I can't even remember the source, I'm wondering about the ratio of fact to fiction in that rumour but I've also been thinking about the outcome if it might be true. I'm not being big-headed but I've found nothing to disprove it, so I'm putting my speculation under a cut in case it's a spoiler.

Day 01: Your Favourite Quote
Day 02: Your Favourite Episode
Day 03: Most Confusing Episode
Following on similiar ground from the post I just made, I'd have to say The Impossible Astronaut has confused me the most. The more I watch it, the more things make even less sense. I SWEAR, every single line in that episode seems to have some sort of further meaning, and I'm confusing myself every time I think about it.
... but it's so GOOD.

Day 02: Your Favourite Episode
Yet AGAIN I started trying to be all encompassing and just failed, MISERABLY FAILED. I starting listing all my favourite episodes, and it ended up pretty being ALL of the episodes. This is the second time I've tried really really hard to isolate my favouritest thing about this show and ended up including JUST TOO MUCH. It is only the second day. Apparently I love Doctor Who. A LOT. Who knew? lulz.
The point is that my favourite episode has always moved around (if I've ever had just one) - I tend to judge an episode on the ones around it, so comparing inter-series favourites doesn't quite work. I might pick my favourites out of each series and then go from there.
The first time I got into Fandom and the reason I'm here now, was because I got swallowed up like many other teenage girls in Ten/Rose. Via the magic of the Big Finish Audio The Kingmaker (my favourite audio *without doubt*) I think, I went all classic!Who, which acted as a sort of Rosefen antedote, and I'm happy to say that any emotional attachment I once had to Rose and Ten has disappeared without trace.
NOW I TALK ABOUT ZEE MOFFAT EPS YEEEEESSSS
... I like ALL of them. The Eleventh Hour was so damn refreshing after Rusty made it all about emoemoemo and setting fire to the moon or something, and I love how resourceful Eleven was, even if he was (to begin with) a bit too much like Ten for my liking. The companion-lite episode was pretty cool too - I didn't expect it to be all that much and yet I watched The Lodger again only a few weeks ago and it was still brilliant. Nice to see it's not just a one-off, either ;P
I HAVE SEEN THE BIG BANG ABOUT A THOUSAND AND A MILLION TIMES AND I AM A BIT IN LOVE WITH IT. No, not really, but I have watched it A LOT. It's just amazing. In my review, I realised that this finale was one that actually felt like it was wrapping up a story rather than just EXPLODING in a lot of ways, and it's still soooooo good, ohmagud. I was also glad to see Moff do a happy Christmas Special, for once. Or a least one with a positive spin, I suppose. Some of the bits were just beautiful - that song haunted my mind for days, and my the quote I listed as my favourite comes from A Christmas Carol.
Finally finally we move onto this series. I'd say it was too early to judge since we're not even up to ep 4 yet, but you know what, I'm GOING TO JUDGE. You know why? Because The Impossible Astronaut was THE EPITOMY of Doctor Who. Matt was PERFECT as a timey wimey travelsome Doctor, River became more than just "spoilers" but an ACTUAL CHARACTER and OT4 OMG; Karen ACTED HER LITTLE SOCKS OFF and it confused and dazzled and entertained and fucking FREAKED OUT everything all at the same time... Oh, just... good writing, good plotting, good acting. Unff.

Since I can't get enough of Doctor Who right now, and I haven't done a meme for a while, the 30 Days of Who is lookin' pretty interesting to me at the moment. Ladies and Gentleman, it is time.
Day 1: Your favourite quote.
I had to think about this for a while. What sort of quote was I looking for? One that made me laugh? Made me scared? Made me think? In the end, I thought this of this one, illustrated in one simple icon by
_pseudofriends .

To me, it sums up who the Doctor is, what his priorities are, why he does what he does. To me, this is the thing we should all aspire to. To me, this is the Doctor, at his very best. This is what Doctor Who is all about: just your average everyday run-of-the-mill entirely unique and brilliant down-to-earth superhero.

Thoughts on River Song pt I
3/5/11 23:07In an attempt to jog my memory about River and maybe pick up anything that makes a little more sense now, I watched Silence in the Library / Forest of the Dead last night. It's only the second time I've watched them since I didn't really rate them the first time round; I didn't enjoy them that much this time either, but all in all it fulfilled its purpose in reminding me of our (and the Doctor's) first meeting with River. It also inadvertently hinted at just how long this whole arc has been in the planning, and how insightful Moffat is. The characterisation for Eleven is already so firm and thorough throughout this episode (via River's expectations) that this is arguably the first Eleven encounter. ( The thing that struck me most was... just how long I managed to whittle on for. )
TEN: No no no what are you doing?! That's my job!
RIVER: What and I'm not allowed to have a career I s'pose?
TEN: Why am I handcuff - why do you even have handcuffs?
RIVER: Spoilers.
TEN: This is not a joke! Stop this now! This is going to kill you! I'd have a chance - you don't have any!
RIVER: You wouldn't have a chance and neither do I!! (pause) I'm timing it for the end of the countdown. There'll be a blip
in the command flow. That way it should improve our chances of a clean download.
TEN: River, please, no!
RIVER: Funny thing is, this means you always known how I was going to die. All the time we've been together, you knew I was coming here. The last time I saw you, the real you, the FUTURE you, I mean, you turned up on my doorstep, with a new haircut and a suit. You took me to Derillium to see the singing towers. (sigh) The towers sang and you cried.
TEN: Let me do this!
RIVER: If you die here it'll mean I've never met you!
TEN: Time can be rewritten!
RIVER: Not those times! Not one lie, don't you dare. It's ok, it's ok. It's not over for you, you'll see me again. You've got all of that to come. You and me. Time and space. You watch us run.
TEN: River, you know my name;
(Auto destruct... )
TEN: you whispered my name in my ear.
(Nine... eight... seven...)
TEN: There's only one reason I would ever tell anyone my name;
(Five)
TEN: there's only one time I could.
(Four)
RIVER: Hush now.
(Three)
RIVER: Spoilers.
(Two... One...)
