I think they are a bit like a '.' and a ',' mushed together. That's what it looks liek, so that's what it is, right?
So you say something like "he went to the door; he saw the crack in the wood from when she had slammed the door."

think...
I still like using them anyway. If I can get away with it, it makes me look clever ;P
